Because we care about your health, we want you to be aware of the latest research reported by the United States Surgeon General in his report: ORAL HEALTH IN AMERICA. Dental disease such as tooth decay and periodontal (gum) disease remain the most prevalent of the oral diseases. Premature, low-birth weight babies -----Studies have found that expectant mothers with periodontal disease are seven times more likely to deliver low-birth weight babies.
Heart disease -----Recent studies have shown that a patient with periodontal disease is twice as likely to develop heart disease as one without periodontal disease. There is additional evidence that bacteria in the mouth which are associated with gum disease may be
linked to artery blockage and stroke.
Bacterial pneumonia ----the very bacteria that cause gum disease can be a contributing factor in this form of pneumonia.
Diabetes ----Periodontal disease is one of the major complications of diabetes. Approximately 95% of Americans who suffer from diabetes also have periodontal disease.
Oral cancer ----Oral cancer is more common than leukemia, skin melanoma, Hodgkin's disease and cancers of
the brain, liver, bone, thyroid, stomach, ovaries and cervix. Long term alcohol and tobacco use are typical factors. One of the most important parts of an oral health exam is a thorough oral cancer screening. We feel we provide excellent oral checkups to insure the health of your mouth.
Do you grind your teeth when asleep or during waking hours? This can cause headache, toothache, earache or even a sore face. This grinding can wear away and even fracture your teeth. An abnormal bite can be a major factor. Your dentist can help.
Good dental health is no longer just a matter of having a mouth that feels and looks good, but it also is an indicator of your overall health and well being. |
